This Owl Box is extremely well built and has been extensively tried and tested by the Barn Owl Conservation Network, conservationists, researchers and ecologists.
About 2000 pairs of Barn Owls currently breed in this particular type of owl box, with an estimated 100,000 owlets having fledged during the last 20 years. This has contributed significantly to the conservation successes now being seen with Barn Owls in the UK.
Constructed of exterior grade 12 and 18 mm bonded plywood, stainless steel screws and brass inspection door bolts and hinges it is designed to last about 15 years in most outdoor situations with minimal maintenance and requires no wood preservative or surface coating.
Whilst being large, strong and durable this beautifully made barn owl box is specifically designed so that it can be installed about 12 feet from the ground onto the face of a tree trunk, wall or existing pole by one or two persons, without the need of any haul ropes or other lifting equipment. The large inspection door is specially designed to aid cleaning and also permits the safe and secure monitoring of breeding barn owls by licensed conservationists.
This owl box comes complete with a construction diagram and details from the Wildlife Conservation Partnership of how and where it should be installed to attract Barn Owls. The floor of the nestbox must be lined with about 2" (5cm) of small wood chippings or similar.
This A Frame nest box is extremely versatile, attractive and durable, allowing it to be positioned within choice habitats on the farm or estate. It has been designed for easy installation on isolated or hedgerow trees, the side of wooden poles or on the outside (or inside) of buildings.
In the UK owl boxes now account for three-quarters of the nest sites used by Barn Owls with ‘A’ Frame type nest boxes being used by over 1500 pairs, one of which produced nine young in 2002, the highest fledging success recorded in the UK
Once a Barn Owl has chosen its first nest site it is likely to use it again year after year, generation after generation.
So what do you get for your money?
This A Frame Barn Owl Box arrives complete with a wireless camera system installed providing everything you need to watch Barn Owls on your TV. The high quality mini video camera provides clear black and white images 24 Hrs a day! Theres also a built in microphone so you can hear as well as see what is going on. VERY easy to set up and hours of fun for everyone!
Please note: Due to the low light levels inside this box a colour camera would produce B&W IR images. This is why we do not offer a colour camera option.
The Camera - All of our nest box cameras are manufactured to our own specification and exacting standards. The camera used in this kit is one of our HIGH RESOLUTION CCD type cameras and has a resolution of 420TVL (TV Lines). This will produce great black and white images day and night as it also has built in infra red night vision. Infra red light is invisible to the human eye and to birds so it will not affect their natural roosting/nesting process in any way. We use a specific type of Infra red light designed to give the optimum illumination levels inside our nest boxes. This virtually eliminates the bright white spot (known as white out) that plagues many other kits available, producing great images whatever time of day or night you are viewing. A built in highly sensitive microphone helps you to hear as well as see whats going on inside the box too. Finally, the camera also has an adjustable focus lens. This is pre-focused to the correct position but can be easily adjusted at a later date should you require.
Our Wireless Kits - The transmitters and receivers used in our wireless systems have been chosen after many hours of research and testing, and in our opinion, offer the best UK legal wireless option available on the market today.
Many kits available today use cameras with mini transmitters built into the housing of the camera and claim transmission distances of up to 100m. We have yet to find a cost effective mini wireless system that will reliably transmit further than 30m so it is always worthwhile contacting the supplier to clarify the actual distance that may be achieved by their kit.
Another disadvantage of having the transmitter built into the housing of the camera is that you will only ever be able to achieve a maximum fixed distance between the camera and the receiver back at the TV.
We use a seperate transmitter and camera in our wireless kits. Both camera and transmitter neatly fit into the nest boxes enabling you to achieve reliable transmission ranges of up to 30m in typical conditions. However, where our kits differ from the competition is that you can easily fit an extension lead between the wireless transmitter and camera to achieve greater distances between your nest box and the receiver back at the TV
Any wireless kit requires a power source to power the camera and transmitter. As it is illegal to disturb nesting birds it is not practical to fit batteries into the actual nest box so there will always be a requirement for a cable to come from the nest box/camera to a convenient power source. Our wireless kits use 12vDC and are supplied with a 12v mains power adaptor (which looks very similar to a mobile phone charger) and 10m DC power cable. The adaptor needs to be plugged into a mains power socket typically situated in a shed or garage. However, the kit can also be powered by a 12v leisure battery (as used in caravaning and camping) if you require (not supplied). Solar panel chargers are also available. please see our solar panel kit range.
We have designed our wireless camera systems to be as flexible as possible. Each transmitter and receiver has four separate channels which means that you can receive images from up to four different cameras on the same receiver. Please call us on 0844 35 10 987 if you would like to expand your system.
This kit can be connected to your computer too if you have the appropriate connections. Look for a round yellow socket (the same as on your TV) on the back of your PC. If you have one of these connectors on your PC it will most likely be on the graphics card, a TV card or a dedicated capture card. If you dont have this connection or you plan to use a laptop we would recommend using one of our Video to USB adaptors. All you need is a spare USB socket and an audio jack input socket (most computers will have these). Software is supplied to get you started (we have XP/Vista and Apple Mac versions available) but once connected you can pretty much use any piece of software that can accept a live video input (eg. most webcam software). We recommend I-catcher Wildlife. This has full motion detection capabilities and much more!
The system is supplied with clear, easy to follow instructions. You will also find lots of other useful information in our Advice and FAQ sections too.
You will have the opportunity to add accessories to this kit such as extension cables and the video to USB adaptor after you click on the ADD TO BASKET button above.
